Benefits
San Diego State University offers a rich benefits package that constitutes a substantial portion of employee compensation. Benefits eligibility is based on position and employment status. Health Benefits - SDSU offers an array of health plans that allow employees to choose benefits that fit their individual needs. With HMO and PPO medical options, two dental plans, and two vision plans, SDSU provides employees and eligible dependents with a health care program that is flexible, accessible, and affordable. Time Off - SDSU offers a generous paid time off benefit of 14 paid holidays, 12 sick leave days, and 10-24 paid vacation days per year, as well as 20 – 30 days of paid parental leave. Retirement - SDSU provides employees with a number of generous retirement benefit plans, including CalPERS. California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) is a defined benefit retirement plan for eligible California public-sector employees. Membership in CalPERS is determined by position, time base, length of appointment, and previous CalPERS agency or reciprocal agency employment. Members who are eligible for retirement receive a monthly pension based on final compensation, years of service, age, and benefit formula. Education Benefits - Eligible SDSU employees may enroll in the Tuition Reduction and Fee Waiver Program. This program waives one California State University (CSU) application fee and tuition for up to 6 units or two classes per semester at any of the 23 CSU campuses as well as the reduction of certain mandatory fees. The waiver may also be transferred to an employee’s eligible dependent enrolled in a CSU matriculated program. Public Sector Loan Forgiveness - SDSU is a qualifying employer under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. For more information go to the Federal Student Aid website. Military Service Credit - If you are a CalPERS member who served in the military prior to CalPERS membership, you may be able to purchase your active duty service with the United States Armed Forces. If you were granted a military leave of absence –leaving your CalPERS covered employment (CSU employment)— and later return to the CalPERS covered employment (return to the CSU), you may be able to receive service credit for your leave of absence at no member cost. Life and Disability Insurances - The University provides qualified employees with income protection including employer-paid Life Insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D), and Long-Term Disability (LTD) insurances through The Standard Insurance Company. Eligible employees may also purchase additional Voluntary Life, AD&D, and LTD insurances directly from The Standard. Voluntary Critical Group Illness coverage through AFLAC is also available. Flexible Spending Accounts - Flexible spending accounts for healthcare and dependent care expenses allow an employee to pay for eligible out-of-pocket expenses with pre-tax dollars, lowering the employee's taxable income and saving money. An employee may make contributions up to the federally-established annual maximums and access the account(s) with the ease of a debit card or direct deposit reimbursement.
Culture
With an enrollment of more than 36,000 students, SDSU is increasingly becoming a top choice for undergraduates as evidenced by the record number of applications received each year. SDSU is consistently ranked by national organizations and publications, to include those such as Forbes, Fortune and U.S. News & World Report, for students studying abroad, its academic excellence, diversity and inclusion initiatives and academic excellence. The university is home to highly ranked graduate programs in business, engineering, public health, psychology, fine arts, biological sciences, public affairs, entrepreneurship, education and speech, language, and hearing sciences. Overall, SDSU students can choose from bachelor's degrees in 96 areas, 84 fields and 23 doctoral degrees, as well as programs at regional microsites and online programs offered no matter where they are around the globe.
Diversity
San Diego State University is committed to fostering an environment of inclusion that values, honors, and respects all members of our University community. As stated in our University Senate statement on diversity, we are a community diverse in race, ethnicity, language, culture, social class, national origin, religious and political belief, age, ability, gender, gender identity and expression, and sexual orientation. We are committed to cultivating a campus climate that promotes human dignity, civility, and mutual appreciation for the uniqueness of each member of our community. Freedom from discrimination, harassment, and violence against persons or property is a basic right and is requisite for learning. SDSU commits to protecting Freedom of speech and encourages all members of the community to promote educational opportunities that appropriately address acts of intolerance around events that have separated us as a people. For more information go to https://sacd.sdsu.edu.
Dual Career
SDSU recognizes that its success in recruiting and retaining faculty is connected to its capacity to help dual academic career couples meet their professional objectives. This is especially true in the recruitment and retention of underrepresented faculty in critical fields: for example, 83% of women in STEM have partners with academic careers (Schiebinger, Henderson, and Gilmartin, 2008; Hill, Holmes, and McQuillan, 2014). Clear information about processes for addressing dual career needs benefits candidates, search committees, chairs and directors, and others involved in the search process. For more information, go to https://fa.sdsu.edu/resources/work_life.
Environment
SDSU’s beautiful campus is a lively mix of historical and state-of-the-art buildings spread over 280 acres of lushly landscaped grounds. Take a virtual tour at https://admissions.sdsu.edu. The architecture reflects the diversity and history of the region, with bell towers, beautiful arched walkways, and ornamental ironwork. Although the campus is large, you can walk across it in just 20 minutes. The exterior of the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union draws inspiration from historic Spanish revival architecture. But internally, it is an ultramodern Double LEED Platinum certified hub for student organizations, events and activity. The Engineering and Interdisciplinary Sciences (EIS) Complex also embraces the Spanish style architecture with an interior that features the state-of-the-art labs and collaborative teaching space necessary for transformative innovation and exploration. The campus’ urban setting is within a 15-minute drive of downtown San Diego and the Pacific Ocean and only two hours south of Los Angeles. Known for its near-perfect climate, miles of sandy beaches, and fun-filled waterfront activities, the San Diego region is home to a wide range of industries, from engineering and biotechnology to agriculture and tourism. The hustle and bustle of the Gaslamp Quarter and downtown neighborhoods is complemented by the charming and eclectic beach towns of Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Coronado and La Jolla.
