UMBC at the Universities at Shady Grove

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Recruitment and Retention of UMBC at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG), the Coordinator of Undergraduate Retention & Student Success will be responsible for supporting, engaging, and empowering current undergraduate students along their academic path to degree completion. A large percentage of this position will consist of interpreting, analyzing, and synthesizing enrollment, retention, and academic performance data and metrics as a means to meaningfully inform, develop, organize, implement, and lead intrusive academic advising outreach and engagement efforts across and on behalf of all of our undergraduate programs. These efforts include providing individualized academic advising support in collaboration with students' assigned academic advisor, program director, and various faculty members, with a special emphasis on developing and utilizing thoughtful and responsive interventions to support students who may be experiencing academic challenges.

The Coordinator of Undergraduate Retention & Student Success will liaise and partner closely with UMBC's Office of Student Disability Services (SDS) by providing administrative support and guidance on behalf of UMBC-Shady Grove students with documented disabilities and accommodations. This position will play an active role in closely collaborating with the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Recruitment & Retention during strategic times of the year to assist with the organization, facilitation, and implementation of our undergraduate orientations, both virtually and in-person, in support of new incoming transfer students.

In addition, the Coordinator of Undergraduate Retention & Student Success will partner with UMBC-Shady Grove administrative staff, UMBC and USG colleagues as well as other relevant stakeholders to assist in the development, design, organization, and facilitation of diverse student engagement and student success programming to support student retention and a sense of belonging within our overall UMBC-Shady Grove community along with other duties as assigned. This position may also have the opportunity to teach a transfer seminar focused on student success.

This role requires strong customer service and project management skills, an equal level of comfort and ability in both working independently as a self-starter and with a collaborative team as well as superb communication and partnership-building abilities across diverse audiences and stakeholders.

Specific duties include: 

•  Provide general academic advising support (Degree Audit inquiries, Transfer Credit Report support, etc.) across all academic programs in collaboration with Program Directors, faculty, and staff. Develop, coordinate, and lead supportive academic advising outreach and engagement practices (through data-informed decision making processes), including running and analyzing regular advising and registration reports and collaborating closely with UMBC's Office of Academic and Pre-Professional Studies to provide ongoing advising training and support for UMBC-Shady Grove staff and faculty.
• Develop targeted and supportive interventions (through data-informed decision making) to ensure student success on behalf of students facing academic challenges to include Early Academic Alerts reporting and outreach, SAP support, and other relevant student success initiatives
• Coordinate and manage the UMBC-Shady Grove Peer Advisory Team (PAT) in collaboration with Coordinator of Undergraduate Recruitment
• Partnership outreach, liaising, and committee work/service to support overall operations.
• Help to develop, plan, and lead various student engagement and student success programming efforts on behalf of current students in collaboration with Coordinator of Shady Grove Operations.
• Serve as administrative liaison and partner with UMBC's Student Disability Services (SDS) on behalf of current undergraduate students with accommodations and reasonable exceptions.
• Assist with coordination and management of orientation programming for new incoming undergraduate students.

• Bachelor's Degree.
• At least 2 - 3 years of academic advising/counseling experience within a higher education context.
• Strong familiarity with and competent understanding of general disability services, supports, and accommodations within high education landscape that result in equal access and full inclusion as well as a proven ability to effectively partner and collaborate with a variety of diverse campus stakeholders (Registrar's Office, Financial Aid, Billing, Academic Advising, etc.) in support of student engagement and affairs, students success, and degree completion.
• Well-versed and highly proficient in Microsoft Office platforms (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and comfort in learning, adjusting, and adapting to different technological platforms and tools as needed to perform job duties and assignments.
