Office of Research Protections and Compliance

The Office of Research Protections and Compliance (ORPC) provides a centralized resource to ensure UMBC conducts its research activities in a manner consistent with federal, state and institutional regulatory requirements. ORPC collaborates with the UMBC community to follow the highest ethical standards governing research and creative achievement activities. The Research Compliance Program Areas include:

1. Human Subjects Protections
2. Animal Care and Use
3. Institutional Biosafety Research
4. Export Control
5. Conflicts of Interest
6. Responsible Conduct of Research
7. Supporting the Vice President for Research with Research Integrity

UMBC is seeking to fill the position at either the Specialist or Senior Specialist level, depending on the qualifications of the candidate. 

UMBC is seeking two motivated individuals with an interest in joining a growing compliance team that supports UMBC's research and creative achievement activities.

Compliance Specialist

With minimal direction from the Director, the Specialist will lead one to two assigned Research Compliance Program Areas in the following manner:

• Provide consultation and pre-review of applications submitted by faculty, staff and students
• Provide consultation of post approval documents (e.g. renewal and continuation reports, modifications and amendments, adverse events, deviations) to provide input, direction and advice
• Advise and provide administrative support to the Compliance Committee(s) including but not limited to coordination of meetings (agendas and minutes), post-approval monitoring and/or for-cause audits and management of protocols in an effective and efficient manner
• Works with the ORPC team to recommend, interpret, draft, implement, train and monitor federal and state laws, regulations, institutional policies, guidelines and compliance SOP’s to help ensure institutional compliance across multiple campus units
• Assists ORPC data management and retrieval of information
• Works with the Director in the analysis and response to research compliance post approval monitoring and/or audits; proposes strategies to respond to and address compliance concerns
• Has a general knowledge of all Research Compliance Program Areas, and may assist with the administrative support of other Research Compliance Program Areas
• Maintain professional growth and development to enhance quality improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of knowledge in the field and continued expertise on relevant best practices (local, regional and national)
• Other duties as assigned

Senior Compliance Specialist

The Senior Specialist will independently lead three or more assigned Research Compliance Program Areas in the following manner:

• Provide independent consultation and pre-review of applications submitted by faculty, staff and students
• Provide independent consultation of post approval documents (e.g. renewal and continuation reports, modifications and amendments, adverse events, deviations) to provide input, direction and advice
• Advise and provide administrative support to the Compliance Committee(s) including but not limited to coordination of meetings (agendas and minutes), post-approval monitoring and/or for-cause audits and management of protocols in an effective and efficient manner
• Works with the ORPC team to recommend, interpret, draft, implement, train and monitor federal and state laws, regulations, institutional policies, guidelines and compliance SOP’s to help ensure institutional compliance across multiple campus units
• Performs lead in ORPC data management and retrieval of information
• Works with the Director in the analysis and response to research compliance post approval monitoring and/or audits; proposes strategies to respond to and address compliance concerns
• Works with the ORPC Team in fielding and responding to incoming research compliance feedback
• Has a general knowledge of all Research Compliance Program Areas, and may assist with the administrative support of other Research Compliance Program Areas
• Maintain professional growth and development to enhance quality improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of knowledge in the field and continued expertise on relevant best practices (local, regional and national)
• Other duties as assigned

Note:  Two positions are available

Compliance Specialist - A Bachelor's Degree and at least two years of experience in research compliance with the ability to lead one to two Research Compliance Program Area(s).

Senior Compliance Specialist - A Bachelor's Degree and at least four years of experience in research compliance with the ability to lead three or more Research Compliance Program Area(s).

For either position, a Master’s Degree and/or certification in a Research Compliance Program Area(s) may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

Licenses/Certifications: Certification as a PRIM&R IRB or IACUC Professional within one year of accepting position will be required if leading either area of compliance.

Experience with electronic research administration software and protocol submission systems/Kuali Protocols preferred
