The Welch Medical Library seeks a flexible and innovative librarian to join the Content & Discovery unit. The Discovery and Electronic Resources Librarian to oversees online discovery and access, electronic resources acquisitions, and collection development activities. This position has a deep understanding of the best practices and maintains knowledge of emerging trends in the entire life cycle of e-resources. The position successfully collaborates with library Informationists, Finance teams, the Office of Procurement, and Legal Counsel to acquire and license materials to support all Hopkins affiliated academic health center entities including the Schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing as well as the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Bayview Medical Center, Howard County General Hospital, Suburban Hospital, Sibley Hospital, Kennedy-Krieger Institute, and All Children's Hospital. The position reports to the Associate Director, Content & Discovery.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Leads the development of acquisition policies, procedures, and workflows
Manages discovery and access to collection resources to ensure continuity, viability, and sustainable access, including batch upload/delete MARC record updates and update resource information for proxy server.
Managescollection development activities in conjunction with the Associate Director
Stewards an annual collections budget for the Welch Library of $4.4 million
Manages the acquisition and licensing of electronic resources including renewal of serials and databases, payment and tracking invoices, maintaining of acquisitions data and records, and harvesting and analyzing electronic resource usage
Establishes effective business relationships with current and prospective publishers, subscription agents, electronic resources vendors, and consortia
Collaborates with other institutional libraries, financial teams, procurement offices, and legal counsel to effectively and efficiently acquire resources
Functions as Team Lead for troubleshooting and coordinating access resolution for students, faculty, staff and other users of the library
Trains and mentors staff to ensure effective operations and build understanding of evolving practices, trends, and standards
Chairs the Electronic Collection Development committee, and interacts regularly with Informationists to assess collections adjustments, cancellations, or additions
Functions as primary contact in working with the library's IT group in support of online access for both on-campus and remote access
Enhances expertise in all aspects of e-resource management through participation in workshops, webinars, professional associations / networks and continued awareness of the scholarly research process
Collaborates with the Scholarly Communication Informationist to advance scholarly communications reform in ways that promote open, equitable, and sustainable publishing and access models.
Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited institution. 3 years professional library experience.
Experience in an academic health environment or medical library as a team lead. Experience with multi-consortia purchasing, negotiating contracts, and license agreements.
Understanding of link resolver software, metasearch software, data collection software, and administrative functions of proprietary databases.
Strong interpersonal, written and oral communications skills as well as strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, flexible, innovative, and solution oriented.
Demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding service.
Experience in an academic research or medical library.
Experience working successfully in a multi-library organizational structure.
Understanding of standards and protocols such as open URL, central authentication services, and electronic data interchange.
Library technical services experience with cataloging, serials, or acquisitions.
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Understanding of link resolvers and COUNTER usage statistics, and administrative functions of proprietary databases. Knowledge of copyright and intellectual property protocols
Remote work will be considered, but preference will be given to candidates who can work onsite.
