The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Office of Sponsored Projects Accounting and Compliance (SPAC) is currently recruiting for an Accounts Receivable Specialist (Accounting Analyst) is responsible for identifying and applying payments of outstanding accounts receivable dollars from the existing sponsor base and all other aspects of Accounts Receivable, resolving customer payment problems and reducing accounts receivable delinquency. Traces, locates and contacts individuals or organizations to identify money on all types of university accounts.
This position will report to the Manager.

Reviewing open accounts for cash application efforts. Applies payments received to proper accounts, keeping accurate accounting records of each transaction; reconciles records with computer reports; makes necessary adjustments or corrections.
Making outbound communication with departments and outside clients in a professional manner while keeping and improving customer relations.
Resolves client-billing problems and rescues accounts receivable delinquency, applying good customer service in a timely manner.
Posts customer payments in accordance with payment due dates.
Identify issues attributing to account delinquency and discuss them with management.
Review and monitor assigned accounts and all applicable collection reports.
Provide timely follow-up on payment arrangements.
Assists others with difficult or complex accounts and situations, utilizing technical knowledge of Accounts Receivable and procedural or legal guidelines.
Compiles data and prepares monthly activity reports and, periodically, more specialized reports for management.
Determines when an account is to be turned over to a collection agency or for litigation; prepares report of historical data to substantiate action to be taken, including payment history and due diligence performed.
Researches and analyzes accounts and informs the Collection Specialist that certain debts need debtor contact; examines historical data; evaluates past trends of Accounts Receivable.
Determines most effective and economical means applying payments to each account; applies standard due diligence practices to clear Accounts Receivable; composes correspondence requiring knowledge of procedures and practices in Accounts Receivable.
Advises debtor with past due accounts of proper payment schedules and the principles of credit and credit standings.
Maintains files on all past due accounts, documenting details of methods utilized to secure payment.
Contacts customer and establishes reason for past due account situation; makes arrangements for payments to bring account current and follows up to ensure obligation is satisfied.
Uses computer terminal to access database for obtaining account status or entering data on assigned accounts; verifies accuracy before and after entry.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelors in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience with a working knowledge of an accounting specialty area, such as Accounts Receivable, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, etc.
Supervisory Experience: N/A
Other: Related experience may be substituted for education requirement.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of government rules, regulations, guidelines and procedures pertaining to sponsored grants and contracts.
Knowledge of basics of work leadership or supervision.
Skill in compiling data and analyzing financial information for decision-making purposes.
Interaction with a large customer base.
Strong communication, problem solving and analytical skills required
Ability to work independently and to adapt to a fast changing environment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and Access.
Experience in a Higher Education environment is preferred but not required.
Must have attention to detail with an eye for accuracy.
Creative, self-disciplined and capable of identifying and completing critical tasks independently and with a sense of urgency.
