Reporting to the Executive Vice Dean, the Associate Dean for Faculty Development (ADFD) will oversee faculty development and mentorship programs in close collaboration with the Dean, Executive Vice Dean, Associate Deans, and faculty. The position will assess needs, develop, implement and evaluate strategies to advance faculty progression according to the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (JHSON) Appointment and Promotion Criteria. The position will support the advancement of a diverse faculty, on both tenure and non-tenure tracks, and promote a diverse, welcoming, and inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff.
Responsibilities Work with the Academic Associate Deans Leadership Group to design, develop, and implement professional faculty development programs and initiatives focusing on:
Implementation and ongoing evaluation of The Faculty Mentoring Program for its support of faculty progression.
Design and implementation of faculty development programs that foster career progression
Systems to monitor the impact of faculty development programs and mid-rank review
Providing guidance for career development among junior faculty including CV preparation, facilitating mentor/mentee relationships, and providing guidance on disseminating work locally, nationally, and internationally.
Providing one-on-one and group-based coaching and mentoring
Identifying mentoring needs and creating individualized professional development plans for faculty to address challenges and opportunities of teaching students and engaging in scholarship, participating in professional service, and other professional development needs
Working with the Dean, Executive Vice Dean and faculty leadership to identify priorities in strategic faculty recruitment and participating in the recruitment process
Coordinating the meetings and work of the Associate Deans Academic Leadership Group
Managing the Faculty Onboarding Program in collaboration with the Executive Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning, Associate Dean for Clinical Practice and the Vice Dean for Research
Maintaining ongoing communication with academic program directors and relevant faculty leaders regarding faculty developmental needs in teaching, research, practice, and service
Working with school leadership to foster an environment of academic excellence, collaboration, diversity, and inclusiveness
Managing and ensuring successful faculty award processes including Maryland Higher Education New Nursing Faculty Fellowship Awards, Fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing, National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, Sigma Theta Tau, and other professional society awards
Faculty portfolio preparation for awards, mid-rank review, and promotion
Functioning as the executive sponsor; writing support letters for faculty going up for promotion drawing information from key personnel such as faculty mentor and associate dean evaluator
Assist faculty who may be struggling with health, or family or faculty responsibilities by referral to the resources available to support faculty in these areas
Conducting exit interviews with faculty to assess reasons for departure
Monitoring strategic faculty recruitment goals and targets and analyzing and identifying trends and issues along with proposed action steps for the School to consider to remedy or enhance faculty development and retention
Working collaboratively with the executive leadership team to achieve school and university goals
The successful candidate will exercise astute judgment in all matters related to faculty development activities and monitoring of career progression. The position requires flexibility and the ability to respond to multiple demands in a time-sensitive manner, willingness and ability to participate as a team member to work collaboratively School leadership. The Associate Dean should have the following qualifications and attributes:
A terminal degree at the PhD or PhD/DNP dual degree level
A strong record of scholarship supported by extramural funding
Eligibility for a faculty appointment at the Associate or Full professor level
Experience developing and mentoring faculty
Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills for teaching and facilitation in both small and large group settings
Interest and experience in faculty development in the areas of leadership, professionalism, and career development
Ability to work effectively in teams composed of faculty, staff, and students
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment as a faculty member in a university.
