The Coordinator for Residence Life & Housing will work to support students across campus by helping them to engage fully with the opportunities of the College’s residential liberal arts environment. Based in a community to racial and social justice and the development of structures responsive to student needs, this role joins the college at an exciting moment. With a newly established vision for integrating student support into accountability structures, this is a unique opportunity to join a motivated team in developing new policies and strategies for supporting success for students of all identities, experiences, and perspectives.
Serving as a member of the on-call residence life team, this position offers the opportunity to build relationships and support students holistically. Supporting students in accountability practices, policy enforcement, and connection to necessary support services, the coordinator will be deeply embedded in the campus community. The coordinator will also work closely with members of the student residence life staff as supervisor of a residential area of campus, making paraprofessional relationship building an essential focus of this position. Fostering the development of student staff through engaged and affirming mentorship and supporting residents in responding to the developmental opportunities of the college environment will be areas of focus in addition to supervising traditional programming and other residential community-building initiatives.
Additional to their residence life responsibilities, the coordinator of residence life and housing will specialize in support of housing operations and administrative processes. Working closely with operations partners, the coordinator will collaborate to implement housing processes including applications, selection, and database management. Recognizing housing is an essential part of students' experience on campus, relationships developed with colleagues and students through this work will be an important foundation of this role.
• Supports Assistant Director in all residential access and student housing processes: off-campus, summer, winter, academic year, break, and first-year housing assignments.
• Mediate student roommate conflicts and disputes, taking into consideration institutional risk and office policy.
• Supports the Assistant Director in developing office capacity to optimize departmental software such as StarRez and Banner through policy creation and database management.
• Initiates and implements housing project work as directed by the Assistant Director.
• Supports students and families in the transition to residential college living by effectively communicating information and making referrals to appropriate resources.
• Navigates difficult conversations with both students and parents about housing-related items and concerns.
• Incorporate the tenants of equity, inclusion, access, and educational justice in all areas of work.
• Assist departmental colleagues to develop and implement programming opportunities in support of health education, community building, and housing-related initiatives.
• Provide leadership, supervision, and development opportunities to a small student staff team to foster personal development, professional growth, and leadership.
• Implement initiatives designed by or in collaboration with Assistant Director and Associate Dean to foster a social justice and racial justice lens development for student staff.
• Utilize individual contacts in meetings with staff to appropriately identify and address student concerns.
• Mediate student conflicts within residential environments utilizing student development theory.
• Converse with student staff to develop clear outcomes associated with programming.
• Serve as a Green Dot Bystander Intervention instructor/facilitator.
• Collaborate with the Office of Intercultural Education on student events.
Live-in/on Responsibilities - Community Development & Residential Conflict Intervention
• Maintain a high level of visibility within the residential community to build relationships with students by conducting rounds when on duty and attending programs and other engagement opportunities.
• Considering community health, equity, fairness, and de-escalation techniques - identify, intervene, and document residential conflicts/issues either when completing rounds or when being dispatched by Campus Safety.
• Collaborate with student staff and campus partners to build strong residential communities that celebrate differences and support all students in their academic and personal success at Bates.
• Empower students to learn conflict management skills when living in community together through both responsive and proactive opportunities.
• Serve as a first-tier responder in a two-tiered on-call duty rotation.
• Coordinate incident and behavioral response, including those that are highly complex in nature; e.g., sexual misconduct, alcohol and drug-related behavior, mental health concerns, bias incidents, health and safety concerns, and community conflict.
• Complete appropriate, accurate, and consistent documentation of policy violations and residential conflicts in accordance with departmental risk management practices.
• Perform on-call responsibilities for the residential system on a regularly scheduled rotation during the year, including all college break periods and holidays - this means be accessible by cell phone 24 hours per day and remain within the required radius of campus during periods of on-call responsibility.
• 1-2 years of experience in residence life or higher education (including professional or undergraduate experience in residence life, student government, student activities, student or outdoor leadership positions, other campus offices, etc.). • Demonstrated success in supporting students from underrepresented groups, including students from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, first-generation-to-college students, LGBTQIAP2+ identified individuals, and low-income students. • Experience working in collaborative and dynamic office environments with frequently shifting tasks and priorities. • Experience in supporting success of peer to peer educational models including implementation of assessment practices. • Experience supporting young adults and their families in the transition to a residential college environment. • Training and experience in facilitating mediation, conflict resolution, or other restorative justice processes.
