Johns Hopkins University seeks a postdoctoral fellow for an appointment in the Center for Social Organization of Schools (CSOS), School of Education (SOE) for Fall 2021. The fellowship will be under the direction of Robert Balfanz, PhD, Professor and Director of the Everyone Graduates Center (EGC) at CSOS. Scholars who have completed a Ph.D. in education or a related field and strong quantitative or qualitative methodological skills are invited to apply to work on cutting edge research and development to advance our understanding of how to increase post-secondary success rates of historically underserved students.
CSOS and its Everyone Graduates Center is dedicated to understanding the obstacles historically underserved students face in graduating from high school and earning post-secondary degrees or certifications, developing and testing solutions to these challenges, and creating environments supportive of their use. CSOS and EGC work collaboratively with students, schools, districts, and state across the nation in co-understanding, co-developing, and spreading effective evidence based practices.
Fall 2021 fellowship focus: Fellows are expected engage full-time research project that aligns with the CSOS/EGC research themes noted abovewith an emphasis on three related on-going projects a) the cross-state high school redesign collaborative in which EGC is working six states and 75 high schools which serve high poverty student populations to create a re-design process that is locally driven and evidence informed to create high schools which serve the needs of their communities in the 21st century including preparing all students for post-secondary success, b) the Pathways to Adult Success Collaborative which involves school districts, state departments of education, institutions of higher education, and local community partners in efforts to improve outcomes for all youth, by better creating supported pathways through k-12 schooling, into and out of post-secondary schooling and training to employment which provides a family supporting wage and c) the Nobody Asked Me Campaign directed by Dr. Richard Lofton which is a community research project that illuminates the voices and experiences of students, youth and their family members in Baltimore to address educational equity and systemic inequalities that they encounter in their homes, schools ,and communities.
Interested candidates will provide a brief proposal that articulates how their research interests align with the goals and projects of the Center.
Final goals and objectives will be jointly established at the start of the fellowship, and will include elements of research design, data collection and analysis, grant writing, mentoring experience, interacting with school, district, and state partners, preparation of publications, and career development. The Fellow will work closely with the other members of the research and development team (researchers and practitioners) and have opportunities to learn about and collaborate with research teams in CSOS and throughout the JHU community in a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment.
The fellowship provides a competitive stipend, a conference and travel stipend, and other benefits for a one-year, renewable position annually for a total of two years. The selected candidate will be appointed as a postdoctoral fellow through the School of Education where training will include access to the rich academic environment (seminars, colloquia, teaching opportunities, etc.) and conduct research as part of the CSOS/EGC research team.
Must have a PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant field of study.
PhD must be completed prior to acceptance. Students in the process of completion must provide assurance that degree will be complete prior to start.
Experience in educational research.
Demonstrated background in research design and statistics
Facility with statistical software and willingness to learn additional platforms
Comfort with working in online platforms for research and collaboration
Experience working with K-12 students/schools
