University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is currently seeking a contractual Laboratory Research Technician to join Department of Cardiac Surgery. Under direct supervision, the selected candidate performs routine bioanalytical, chemical, or physical tests according to standardized processes, and performs other laboratory activities and maintenance. Qualified individuals will be expected to perform all histology related work. Experimental duties include but not limited to histology sample preparation, fixation, dehydration, embedding, sectioning (paraffin sectioning and cryosectioning), common histology staining such as H&E, Trichrome and Alcian Blue, Immunohistochemistry and Immunofluorescence staining, RNA in situ hybridization staining including RNascope. Histology samples are quite diversified, including murine embryos, and various murine adult organs. Other duties include but are not limited to mouse genotyping, maintenance of laboratory bacterial culture stocks, mammalian cell culture stocks, DNA Plasmid stocks, laboratory equipment and general lab supplies, and place lab orders.

PRIMARY DUTIES :
Performs routine and experimental biological procedures.
Prepares histology samples.
Assists with sterile procedures.
Collects, prepares, and processes specimens.
Collects, records, and enters research data.
Performs general housekeeping of laboratory.
Maintains chemicals and equipment inventory.

EDUCATION: Bachelors degree in a biological or chemical science.
OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Candidate must excel in standard histology techniques and assays. General knowledge of the principles and practices of natural and/or chemical sciences; of the safe and proper handling and disposal of applicable specimens, materials and equipment. Ability to perform laboratory procedures using applicable equipment and techniques; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to use computers and related software applications; to lift, transport and deliver materials and stock laboratory supplies and goods; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform job. Employees in this job class may be required to work with biohazardous or radio-labelled materials and to successfully complete applicable safety training.
Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates are not eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).
Salary Range: $40,000 - $45,000
