Laboratory Animal Research Training Specialist - (210000DX)
The University of Maryland School of Medicine has an opening for a Training Specialist to work in the Department of Veterinary Resources and Comparative Medicine Program. The Training Specialist will be responsible for developing a training curriculum and training research investigators and staff in the handling of different laboratory animal species, their housing systems, and related procedures.
The Program in Comparative Medicine, established in 1989, studies the characterization of animal models of human disease for biomedical research and the use of such models to advance understanding of disease or biological processes. Comparative medicine contributes to the School of Medicine by providing accredited services for laboratory animal care, collaborative research, professional development of veterinary physicians and staff, formal training of veterinarians in residence and a resource for information and instruction on the use of laboratory animals in research.

Develop curriculum to train research investigators and their staff in the following areas:
Humane handling of laboratory animals
SOPS for training and handling of animals
Basic biomethodologies appropriate to the specific research interest
The acceptable use of the resources within the Centralized Animal Facilities
Proper use of the biosafety cabinets when handling laboratory animals
Biosecurity of laboratory animals
Humane Handling of Laboratory Animals
Proper handling and use of the various housing systems used within the facilities.
Transportation of animals from and to the Centralized Facilities.
Regulations and guidelines for the use of laboratory animals in research
Animal identification techniques and technologies
Develop a curriculum to train laboratory animal care staff in the following areas:
AALAS certification for the ALAT, LAT and LATg certification levels.
Animal care Standard Operating Procedures.
The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
The animal welfare regulations (9 CFR Part 3)
Train VR staff on facility specific SOPs. Includes training new caretakers.
Recruit instructors for the various training curricula
Develop a training records system (e.g. use the Elements training module) for documenting training.
Develop a system for testing proficiency related to each training module within each curriculum and document their proficiency
Define what training materials are to be made available and what the mode of training will be (e.g. server-based training materials, training libraries bot virtual and hard copy).
Develop the training program through GAP analysis to strengthen the program capabilities.
Education: Bachelor's degree in human resources, organizational development, business, communications, or related field to program. Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in biological sciences or teaching, LATg is preferred. Experience: Two (2) years related training experience. Prior experience with laboratory animals, specifically rodent handling, is strongly preferred. Preferred: Prior experience establishing a training program. Other: Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.

The Hiring Range for this position is in the high $50,000s to low $70,000s, commensurate with education and experience.
