The Center for Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR)/Division of Patient Safety at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is seeking an IT Programmer II . Under general supervision, the IT Programmer II designs, codes, tests, debugs, documents, and maintains complex computer programs for processing collected patient vital signs in order to predict outcomes. Our ideal candidate will also devise or modify procedures to solve complex problems considering computer equipment capacity and limitations, software constraints, operating time, and form of desired results and participate in system and application security and control procedures. The position also will provide consults for projects hardware/software architecture design and system diagnosis.
STAR-ORC is a world-class, multi-disciplinary research and educational center focusing on brain injuries, critical care and organ support, resuscitation, surgical outcomes, patient safety and injury prevention. It is the first research center in the nation dedicated exclusively to the study of trauma, its complications and prevention. The Patient Safety Division within STAR-ORC focuses on developing the advanced algorithms and devices for predicting patient status.
The Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research Center serves as a research umbrella for the Department of Anesthesiology and the Program in Trauma. Many of the researchers working in the new research center are doctors who care for trauma patients at the University of Maryland's R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.

Develops complex programs which may include programming to include interpreting specifications; designing program logic to achieve performance; coding, compiling, debugging, and testing program logic.
Reviews the application design specifications and implementation strategy with respect to the potential impact on new and existing data structure and system performance.
Provides guidance and training to less experienced coworkers.
Participates in strategies for total system and application security.
Implements control procedures consistent with audit requirements.
Develops and maintains client system and operations documentation.
Develops materials for client training sessions and assists in delivering training sessions.
Responds to inquiries and requests from clients.

Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or related field strongly preferred.
Experience: Two (2) years applicable programming experience.
General knowledge of applicable programming languages and software packages. Working knowledge of security and internal control procedures related to programming. Skill in writing programs in applicable languages; in analyzing and designing program logic. Ability to operate applicable computer input devices and peripherals; to communicate effectively with clients; to resolve programming problems and determine the impact of proposed solutions; to communicate effectively in writing.
OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
