Senior Systems Engineer - University Information Services
The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for management, planning, and operations of Windows, Linux and UNIX servers in University Information Services, with a primary responsibility is working with engineering and operations staff to design new systems and with end users to analyze and document requirements. They have accountability for the security, availability and performance of these systems, and perform software installation and ongoing maintenance and improvements to include patching. The Senior Systems Engineer also spends some time on researching new technologies and assess their applicability to Georgetown's needs, and works independently with staff from the applications, help desk, operations center and other UIS teams for hardware and software related issues.
Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure, the Senior Systems Engineer also receives periodic direction from UIS management to identify new projects. They work independently to design, develop and implement new systems in coordination with other teams and using the approved developed processes. Interacting primarily with technical staff within UIS, they also establish and maintain regular contact with peers at other institutions, in duties that include but are not limited to:
Provides setup, maintenance, and administration of Windows, UNIX/Linux based servers to ensure that servers meet Service Level Agreement (SLA) performance and uptime standards; and supports a variety of applications and processes that depend on the servers.
Supports a variety of applications and processes that depend on the Intel-based servers, e.g., backup, off-site tape rotation, disaster recovery preparedness, directory and time synchronization, network file and printing, remote server management, remote user access, and system security.
Plans for future growth and development of Intel based server systems, advising on the need to replace, upgrade, or expand servers at least one year prior to the server's reaching performance bottleneck.
Provides 24x7 server support by participating in after-hours on-call schedule and performs scheduled maintenance and upgrades during weekend and evening hours.
New Products and Configurations Testing
Keeps in touch with cutting-edge server solutions and attends professional training and conferences, as appropriate.
Assists Engineering group in testing new products, technology, and configurations in the testing lab, and provides assistance with integrating them into the server infrastructure to provide better performance, greater up-time, and new features to the user community, both internal and external to UIS.
Manages the turnover of new products, technology, and configurations in the testing lab and integrating them into the production server infrastructure to provide better performance, greater up-time, and new features to the user community, both internal and external to UIS.
Cyclical Projects Administration
Performs regular maintenance and audits to server systems, including security audits, capacity management, and software patch level surveys.
Participates and performs periodic disaster recovery testing, which may be either announced or unannounced and may require travel to a remote disaster recovery site.
Coordination and Communication
Works on a regular basis with members of several other groups within UIS, including Engineering Group, the Help Desk, Operations Center, and NCS.
Consistently provides updates the stakeholders of the servers on the current status of server systems and coordinates with them future changes and installations
Coordinates system changes with stakeholders to ensure minimal negative user impact.
Develops technical guides that explain system use and access for distribution to technicians in other groups and the user community as a whole; and trains other groups (Applications, Operations Center, Help Desk, End Users) on utilities deployed on these servers.
Helps to develop and refine policies and procedures relating to security, data integrity, change control, and documentation of server systems, working in accordance with these procedures.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related computing field
7+ years' experience in Systems Administration
Demonstrated skills in planning and deployment of complex information systems
Demonstrated practical and textbook knowledge of common network protocols
Ability to explain, document and design complex technical architectures
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications
Working knowledge of server hardware and TCP/IP network protocols, SCCM, Windows Registry and DevOps practices
Solid understanding of network design (routing, throughput) and server capacity management (automated monitoring and SNMP)
Experience in programming and scripting languages, provisioning tools (Terraforms, Salt, Ansible)
Be familiar with administering software packages, regular patching and tools on server platforms
Experience in administration of Linux and Solaris servers in a LDAP environment within the VMware ESX Infrastructure and Solaris Containers
Firsthand experience in setting up a UNIX server systems (Linux or Solaris), writing UNIX Shell Scripts (csh, ksh), administering a file backup service (any), configuring TCP/IP systems (DNS, DHCP), administration of network firewalls (iptable/ipfilter), web server administration (Apache), experience using Avocent console management services or similar vendor (serial or kvm)
Experience with Puppet (configuration management), Nagios, HP OpenView, Control-M, Splunk (central logging), and Asset Management
