Working in the Brain Science Institute, the Sr. Financial Analyst (Sr. FA) is responsible for managing a combined research budget of approximately $10M per year for the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins and Answer ALS, a multi-institutional program that operates within the Center. The Sr. FA works closely with members of faculty, staff and the organization’s board of governors to manage and report on financial revenues and expenditures.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Financial Analysis and Reporting (30%):
Develops annual operating budgets for the both Packard Center and the Answer ALS research program
Performs analysis on budget performance, investigates variances, provides justification, and communicates to leadership
Delivers written quarterly financial reports to the Packard Center Board of Governors and the Answer ALS Advisory Board
Presents summary financial reports during quarterly board meetings
Discusses insights and recommendations with leadership
Completes monthly reconciliation for the Center’s accounts, analyzes budget patterns and projects expenditures
Extracts financial data from accounting and information systems and performs financial and cost accounting analysis of data
Works with faculty and staff to set-up independent contractors and verifies the process is in accordance with university guidelines
Tracks consultant, vendor and sub-recipient payments against agreement ceilings/purchase order balances and communicates funding shortfalls
Develops and oversees the maintenance of account budget monitoring systems
Monitors, identifies and communicates over expenditures to faculty and administrative staff; also resolves funding shortfalls
Oversees the procurement process for the Center’s accounts
Keeps abreast of laws and regulations that apply in order to maintain up-to-date compliance with all sponsored and non-sponsored accounts
Grants Management (50%):
The Packard Center was founded in 2000 with the sole purpose of supporting ALS biomedical research. The Sr. FA will play a key role in the administration of sponsored and non-sponsored funds.
Works closely with Center faculty and staff to prepare budgets and regulatory documentation required for grant submission
Central to the Packard Center’s mission, is the subaward process. At any one time, the Center funds approximately 30 ALS investigators in the US and internationally. In addition, the Center funds eight Answer ALS research program investigators located at academic institutes across the nation. The Sr. FA is responsible for executing and managing this portfolio.
Determines and monitors funds available for new research subawards
Works with scientific leadership to initiate and maintain subawards
Works with the Office of Research Administration (ORA) at Johns Hopkins to administer grants
Reviews and authorizes payment of funding invoices from external research institutions in accordance with the terms of their subaward
Periodically authorizes funding transfers to established accounts

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):
Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or other related field
Five years progressively responsible related financial/accounting experience
Additional education (Master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Advanced knowledge of SAP accounting system practice and implementation within the Hopkins environment desirable
Advanced knowledge and extensive use of Microsoft Excel (able to create complex/multifaceted formulas, develop complex workbooks, generate macros, etc.)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
