The Critical Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) will work collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary critical care team that provides comprehensive care to critically ill oncology and hematology patients. The NP will work under the supervision of an attending intensive care physician who is a member of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine. The NP will also work collaboratively with resident and fellow physicians, Oncology Intensive Care Unit staff nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, and Hematology/Oncology consultant physicians.
The Nurse Practitioner will be granted affiliate staff privileges by the Johns Hopkins Hospital Medical Board; these privileges list specific tasks and are reviewed annually.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Obtain history and perform physical examinations on newly admitted and follow-up Oncology ICU mechanical ventilation and other life support systems, and other treatments as necessary.
Participate in daily rounds to report progress of specific patients and help to develop care plans.
Perform procedures such as arterial catheterization, central venous catheterization, and thoracentesis and will instruct residents in optimal performance of these procedures.
Educate patients and families regarding the nature of their clinical problems, prognoses, and options for continued care.
Participate as a teacher and as a learner in educational activities in the Oncology Intensive Care Unit and the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Additional experience may substitute for master's degree. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
Medical critical care experience
Prior experience with oncology or bone marrow transplant patients is preferred, but not essential.

Analytical abilities are necessary to diagnose patients and to develop and implement plans of action for long and short term management of acute and chronic health.
Advanced interpersonal skills are necessary to communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and problem-solving.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary to provide information to patients and health care personnel.
Ability to attend to information presented one-on-one and during staff meetings.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Ability to work well as a member of a health care team with a high degree of self-motivation.
Able to function effectively in a fluid, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment.
General computer knowledge and ability to use computerized medical information systems
Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment. Ability to lift patients, 50 lbs. or more.
